Ink and Print Supplies

An inkjet cartridge is a replaceable component of an inkjet printer that contains the ink that spreads on paper during printing and sometimes the printhead itself. Each inkjet cartridge contains one or more partitioned ink reservoirs (dams), the electronic contacts and a chip that communicates with the printer.

Within each partition in the tank of the inkjet cartridge (deposit) is a small metal plate. In response to a signal from the inkjet printer, a small current flows through the metal causing it to heat. The ink surrounding the heated plate evaporates. The printer manufacturers, Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Dell, Canon, Epson and Brother, often break even or lose money selling printers and expect to recoup their losses by selling inkjet cartridges over the life of the printer. Since much of the benefits of the printer manufacturers are composed of inkjet cartridges and toner sales, these companies have taken various measures to limit consumer choice in the use of inkjet cartridges aftermarket.

However, many consumers have purchased remanufactured alternative enterprises cartridges to save money buying inkjet cartridges. This is a better use of resources, much cheaper, and a whole industry that has grown around this idea. Remanufacturing of inkjet cartridges and other printer supplies also reduces the amount of plastic that goes into the landfill and keeps Earth a cleaner place.
