Inkjet Paper Fine Art

Question for FINE ART COLLECTORS + Gallery OWNERS?
I am currently on a printmaking course and have learnt about basic monotype printmaking as well as silkscreen and photo etching, hard ground and aquatint.
However, prices to use this studio are expensive and I would like to produce small to medium sized monotone prints of a style that is painterly and loose. I know that my images are good, saleable and my teacher has commented on my recent images.
My question is
Is digital inkjet printing a form of fine printmaking?
I would combine handmade and digital techniques to develop images and print using only the finest cotton rag paper and inks.
Is digital inkjet seen as a lesser artform, and even so, will galleries be democratic if I wanted to present limited runs of digital prints, which I know are commercial yet have their own internal language and so could be appreciated by someone who values pictorial language.
Can I sell work and class myself as a printmaker using solely inkjet prints? Thanks for your time.
I make my living as a professional fine artist. This is a controversial subject in the art world right now.
The term “print” is confusing because people use it to mean several things. Non-artists will use the word to refer to any kind of copy or multiple artwork, even posters. Today, with the use of inkjet printing, the line between original art prints and more zerox-like copies gets blurred.
Traditionally, in the fine art world, a true art print is one that is hand-pulled by the artist, such as monotype and silkscreen, and those printing forms where the artist actually created or etched the printing block and stands (with the master printer) at the press as the prints are created. You are a fine art printmaker if you create these kinds of works.
Once, it was thought that if you are creating solely inkjet prints, then you are making copies of your original works (whether they are made totally digitally or are scanned pictures of your art). It gets even more confusing with artists painting or drawing on prints, thus creating new “originals.” And, then there are artists and photographers who work only in digital form.
So, I think what is important is what kind of artist you are and what your media is. If your media is purely digital, then inkjet or giclee prints are your artworks. Then, call yourself a “digital artist,” not a printmaker. Some, more progressive galleries will accept them as original art. Other galleries will take the traditional approach and reject them. The public, in general, does not seem to care. Most people buy what they like if the price is right for them.
